Abstract

Leucaena Leucocephala was known as long-lived and highly nutritious forage tree as it is widely beneficial to the livings and is estimated to cover up to 2.5 million throughout the globe. L.Leucocephala is well known as ‘Petai Belalang’ in Malaysia and can be identified by its intermediate leaflets and large pods. The naturally occurring phytochemicals such as terpenes, flavonoids, tannins, steroidal, coumarins and alkaloids in plants have increase its value to be used in many medical sectors as an anticancer, antibacterial, anti-coagulant and anti-inflammatory. Therefore, an investigation into the effect of temperature (30 – 70 ℃, at 10 ℃ interval) on the extraction of phytochemicals from L.Leucocephala using microwave assisted hydrodistillation (MAHD) was performed. From the study, phytochemicals including glycosides, phenols, terpenoids and alkaloids were identified. Glycosides were highly presented in both pods and seeds, at 50 and 60  respectively. This study has gone some way towards enhancing the potential of L.Leucocephala in medical industry for drug development against various diseases.
